Erosion Control

Pine log retaining wall.

This type of retaining wall is intended to restrict bulk soil movement. The anchors are also environmentally friendly, in the sense that they are simply a relatively small amount of cast iron, with none of the cement or chemicals that can sometimes be found with other systems.

Example of soil erosion at the foundation footings of a transmission tower. This can be caused by the use of conventional anchoring systems to support the structure.

Slope Stabilization at Alpine Way Thredbo, Snowy Mountains

Platipus Anchors, type S04, were used to hold the Geomat at the top of the slope. Then S02 type anchors were used on a grid to hold down the Geomat, which contained soil for growing grass. As well as stabilizing the slope itself, this system provides high protection from erosion. Eventually, the natural covering of the slope will re-establish itself obviating future serious erosion concerns.

Systems based on similar principles have been used in river foreshore work. This approach allows the eco system time to recuperate and re-establish itself. Also, in some instances fallen trees at the river’s edge have been anchored to the riverbank to prevent further loss of soil and nutrient.
