PLATIPUS TREE ANCHORING SYSTEMS

Platipus Tree Systems have been specifically designed for the professional. A full range of kits provides both rootball and guy anchoring for a variety of mature and semi-mature tree transplants of up to 20 metres height.

The system has been designed to offer a complete package for fast and secure anchoring during the first 3 years of growth with the tree in its new position. The intention is to protect valuable and vulnerable mature and semi-mature transplanted trees and anchor them securely at low cost, without damage to the rootball.

The Platipus Tree Anchoring System is based on the unique Platipus anchor. See How the System Works for more information.

THE TWO METHODS OF ANCHORING TREES

Two traditionally approved methods are possible: root ball fixing and guying. Both methods have been proven on thousands of transplants involving most types of tree. The Platipus system offers maximum stability and secure anchoring of the root ball. Anchors can be installed very quickly by unskilled labour, which reduces costs dramatically.

Rootball Fixing

Guy Fixing

A number of standard kits for different sizes of trees are available. The kits come complete with all the components. A variety of tools are available including drive rods, tension levers and loadlocking devices depending on the size of tree kit you require. Additionally, a timber triangle will need to be made to support and spread the load across the rootball.

INSTALLATION OF TREE SYSTEMS

Root ball Kit Installation

All tree kits are supplied with full instructions to assist the on site process. The Rootball System is a unique and very secure way of holding the rootball firmly during its first 3 years of growth in its new environment. During the period, further adjustment can be made to the tensioner ensuring the security of the root ball at all times.

Guy Kit Installation

All tree kits are supplied with full installation instructions. The Guyed System offers a quick and very stable method of securing a tree for long-term stability and growth.

SYSTEM CHOICE

Choosing the correct tree kit is important. You must consider firstly whether you require above ground or below ground fixing. In some cases, the size of the sail area of the tree will influence the choice.

If you wish to use a rootball system, then you should inspect the rootball of the tree to check it is suitable for this type of fixing. You need to know the height and circumference of the tree you are going to plant to make the correct choice of kit.

Root ball Fixing Kit

The Root ball Fixing Kit is the most popular method of securing many mature and semi-mature transplants. The ease of installation of the kit (greatly enhanced by the ratchet tensioner included with the kit – see picture at right above) and the lack of unsightly wires (which are a trip hazard for persons walking near the tree) makes it the first choice of many customers. In deciding whether you can use this kit, consider the quality of the rootball and the trees exposure to the environment (particularly wind and its effect on the sail area).

This kit comes complete with instructions but requires the purchase of materials to create a timber triangle. Special variations are manufactured for particular applications.

Guy Fixing Kit

The Guy Fixing Kit is supplied complete with instructions and is available in 4 sizes to suit trees up to 20m. It is based on the latest range of Platipus Stealth anchors. These offer a significant potential increase in holding capacity and are designed to drive into the ground more quickly than their predecessors. Platipus also manufacture special kits to suit a variety of applications.

INSTALLATION TOOLS

With the exception of small kits, you may need to purchase or hire installation equipment. All these tools have been tested over many years and if used carefully can be re-used.

Where multiple installations of trees are concerned, using powered equipment to install the anchors is recommended. Additionally, it will be easier to install the larger "G" and "RF" kits using either petrol or compressed air breakers. Some of the tools are essential for the installation process. Other pieces of equipment make the general process easier and quicker.
